4 Ways Teen Athletes Can Ensure Their Braces Are Well Protected

A Smile Can Change Everything

Some of the most common complaints from teens and their families when it comes to dental trouble are related to braces and sports injuries. While every athlete knows that wearing a mouthguard while playing sports is a must, athletes with braces have to go the extra mile. Here is a list of things you can do to ensure both your mouth and your braces are well-protected during the game:Use an Orthodontic Mouthguard: Orthodontic mouthguards are the best type of dental protection for young athletes. This type of mouthguard is a little different from regular mouthguards as they are made from high-grade silicone that cushions the lips from bumping against the teeth and the brackets. Because orthodontic mouthguards are made of silicone, unlike regular ones that are made of plastic, they also reduce the impact in case you get hit. Orthodontic braces are customized to suit your preferences and can be modified to accommodate the changing shape of your teeth during the course of the treatment.Wear the Necessary Protective Gear: Simply wearing the right type of mouthguard isn’t enough, you must also ensure you are wearing all the necessary protective gear required to perform your sport of choice.

Play Cautiously: Each time you step on the field, make sure your personal safety is always on top of your mind! (Apart from the winning strategy of course!) Keep your head in the game and be very attentive to whatever is happening on the field, so you aren’t caught by surprise at any moment and end up taking an unfortunate blow.

Always Be Prepared: In spite of all the care and precaution, there are instances where you may have a minor infraction and end up with a loose bracket or a stray wire. If this happens in the middle of a game, find a piece of sterilized cotton and prop it up against the bracket/wire till the game is over. As soon as the game is over, consult your orthodontist and book an appointment to get it fixed as soon as possible to avoid any negative effects.

If you are looking for more information related to playing sports with braces or have faced sports injuries due to braces and require help, contact Koch orthodontics in Lawrenceville, GA to book an appointment with Dr. Koch and we ensure you will get the necessary help as soon as possible!
